American Samoa, a U.S. territory in the South Pacific, has a history of invasive species problems and limited success managing them. Created to respond to these conditions, the American Samoa Invasive Species Task Force (ASSIST) includes researchers, management specialists, and concerned citizens. The group's goals are (1) to increase public awareness, (2) improve agency communication, and (3) coordinate management efforts on invasive species. ASSIST has created an invasive plant priority list, developed a manager's field guide to established invasive plants, and is making brochures to inform the public about plants to avoid bringing into the territory. There are significant biological, administrative, and cultural challenges to address, but ASSIST should be an effective means to overcome these obstacles.
